Вольфганг Шойбле, Министр финансов ФРГ, высказался в поддержку жестких позиций в отношении Великобритании на переговорах о выходе страны из Евросоюза. 

Министр подчеркнул, что не существует прав без обязанностей, таким образом выход Британии из Евросоюза должен стать процессом обучения для стран ЕС и прежде всего для Великобритании. Шойбе заявил, что не хочет наказывать Британию, однако процесс выхода будет болезненным, а остальные страны-члены ЕС должны в первую очередь стремиться к сохранению единства союза.

Министр отметил, что Британия имеет крупный финансовый центр в Лондоне, но она должна принять правила европейского сообщества, чтобы сохранить обычный доступ к рынку Евросоюза.

Тереза Мэй, премьер-министр Великобритании, 29 марта передала главе Евросовета Дональду Туску письмо с уведомлением о начале процесса выхода Великобритании из ЕС. Ровно через 2 года в соответсвии с 50-й статьей Лиссабонского договора Британия должна официально выйти из состава Евросоюза.
