The main events by the morning: January 16

• US President Biden summed up the results of his presidency. In his statement, the Democrat noted that he had managed to strengthen NATO, preserve Ukraine's freedom, and also overtake China in the competition. Biden said that he and his team had promoted a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and ensured a peaceful transfer of power to Trump. Among the threats, the ex-president noted a large concentration of wealth in the hands of a minority and the risk of an oligarchy in the United States. 

• The situation in Gaza remains tense. Despite the ceasefire agreement signed yesterday, the Israeli army continued shelling Gaza, launching massive strikes on the territory. The signed agreements are due to enter into force on January 19. 

• Americans are in no hurry to support the idea of Greenland joining the United States. The majority of US citizens surveyed (53%) opposed this plan, 29% considered the idea good but unrealistic, and only 11% fully supported Trump. About 1,000 people took part in the survey. 

• Gazprom plans to liquidate representative offices in Brussels and Tokyo. The issue will be discussed at a meeting of the company's board of Directors on January 28.

• The average salary in Russia has almost doubled over the past 5 years compared to the era before the COVID-19 pandemic. The figure reached 84 thousand rubles. This is due to the growth of the Russian Federation's GDP, which increased from 110 to 196 trillion rubles. However, the real growth was lower due to inflation, but still outweighed the negative impact of the pandemic and sanctions.
