The US Senate has approved a resolution on the ratification of the protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. This decision was made as a result of a vote. Thus, the United States has joined the list of countries (and there are already more than 20 of them) in favor of NATO expansion. Finland and Sweden have remained neutral for many years, but with the beginning of Russia's military operation on the territory of Ukraine, the Scandinavian countries requested membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Back in early July, US President Joe Biden sent the protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO to the Senate. According to the terms of the established procedure, the ratification is carried out directly by the President of the United States, but before that, the Senate must give its consent to this. Russia has repeatedly noted that the NATO bloc has an aggressive character and is aimed at confrontation. The Russian authorities are confident that the expansion of the military alliance will not bring Europe the desired security. At the same time, Russia itself does not consider the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO to be a threat to the Russian Federation – Moscow remains open to dialogue and calls on the West to abandon the course of militarization of the continent.
