The EU is ready to return sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program

The European Union is considering the possibility of restoring sanctions against Iran if there is no progress in resolving the issue of the nuclear program. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a meeting of EU foreign ministers held in Brussels. 

Kallas stressed that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) provides for a rapid response mechanism that allows for the resumption of all restrictions if the situation does not improve. According to her, the consensus that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons requires joint efforts to achieve its goals.

The nuclear agreement, signed in 2015 by Britain, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran, provided for easing the sanctions regime in exchange for curtailing Tehran's nuclear program. However, in 2018, the United States, under the administration of Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA, reimposing sanctions against the Iranian leadership. In response, Tehran began to gradually abandon its obligations, separately announcing the lifting of restrictions on nuclear research and an increase in the level of uranium enrichment.
